An association to unite us all who teach English professionally has been created. The aim is to share experiences, exchange materials and encourage further training with conferences, lectures and debates and ultimately become the voice of teachers of English and liaise with all those involved and especially with our educational authority.

21st Century Teaching Always on the Move

The 2014 convention theme, "21st Century Teaching: Always on the Move"
emphasizes that language learning has to adapt to an ever-changing reality and implies that we need to equip our students with 21st century skills if we want them to succeed. We welcome presentations which deal with those afore-mentioned 21st Century Skills (Critical Thinking and Problem solving, Creativity and Innovation, Communication and Collaboration, ICT literacy etc.) as well as those which are of wide general interest for language teachers working in different sectors and with students of all ages.

Valencia International Visits IES Malilla

Valencia International Visits IES Malilla

Valencia International Visits IES Malilla

For our second school visit we were invited to IES Malilla by English teacher Concha Pomares.
malilla1
Two groups of sixth formers listened attentively and asked lots of questions about Valencia’s on-line paperless English newspaper.
malilla2
Unfortunately the technology let us down a little and we weren’t able to see much of the newspaper or explain some of the other surprises we had in store so we are now looking for a further date to return and do the job properly.
Once again we invited students to collaborate by writing articles for us.
We were joined this time by our new collaborator Elena Tejador, Managing Director of Aula Inglés, who was able to answer the student questions that we couldn’t answer, mainly about summer jobs in Britain.
Our next stop is Manises on Monday 3rd February.
These visits are completely free and any school interested should get in touch with us.

Swallows.....

Hiya!

How often do we, well, pick up a newspaper, take a brief glance at the morning news or read a news flash that your smart device zaps you with and g-r-o-a-n...."they're at it again!"  Be it a flood, a suicide bomb, famine, an uprising or simply a demonstration by a bunch of disgruntled citizens, we just find it so difficult to empathize with the unknown and unfamiliar.

"Swallows of Kabul" was an eye opener.  I, for one, would henceforth find it difficult to look at yet another news clip from a relatively less fortunate part of the world and be indifferent.  Yasmina Khadra, or should I say Mohammed Moulessehoul, describes life in trouble-torn Afghanistan at various  stratae.  Given the harsh subject, the sensitivity and sophistication of style, surprised us. Our preconceived bias questioned how an ex Army Officer could write like this!   Yeah, we all admitted to "wikipediaing", hey, it's the done thing!!!

The key words in our chat over tea and munchies, was compliance and submissiveness.  Why were the unfortunate characters so accepting of their circumstances? Could they have reversed their fate?? Why were they so compliant??? What would we have done in those circumstances?

If his aim was to walk his reader through bylanes, homes and establishments of present day Afghanistan,  he certainly succeeded. "Swallows of Kabul" left no one indifferent; we felt incredulity, horror, surprise, suspense, pain, helplessness but indifference??? No, definitely not!

Well, life goes on, and we moving to the Western Hemisphere, North America, Canada in particular.  Our next story teller is Alice Munro with her collection of short stories Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage.

We meet on Friday, 28 March 2014 for our tryst with Alice Munro!

Take care and see you then!
