English in Spain November 14 Hi All Great news this month about British Council training opportunities for teachers in Castilla-La Mancha, a new free MOOC for English language teachers and a really exciting research opportunity in Spain.  If you missed our Education Fairs you can download this year's guide and some top presentations about studying in the UK from our webstie.   Enjoy! Maureen  New CLIL Essentials online course available in Castilla-La Mancha.   Deadline for applications 5 November. We are delighted to offer our new CLIL Essentials online course to Primary and Secondary teachers in Castilla-La Mancha.  There are 180 places available on the course beginning 17 November and running until 29 May 2015. Hurry!  The call for applications is open until 5 November and full details are available on the CRFP Castilla-La Mancha website.   New free British Council MOOC for English Language Teachers. Starting date: 17 November. You can get a taste of what studying an MA would be like with this free online course:  Understanding Language, Learning and Teaching  is a  free 4 week course and an introduction to key concepts in the effective teaching and learning of languages, drawing on the exciting new MA in English Language Teaching created by the British Council and Southampton University Café Scientifique:  Smart Cities  5 and 6 November at 19.30.  Casa Encendida Madrid.    There are still places left at these 2 great events which are part of the Sustainable Cities series.  The Café Scientifiques are a chance for the public to engage in debate with experts on key scientific topics. 5 Nov:  Brighton/ Santander.  Yvonne Rogers  and Jose Antonio Teixeira. 6 Nov  : London / Barcelona. Ben Campkin and Julia Lopez i Ventura.   Places are free but limited so  please remember to book.  Book on 91 506 38 83. Research opportunity in Bilingual Education.   Deadline for applications 17.00 Friday 28 November.   British Council in Spain and the Centro Nacional de Innovación e Investigación Educativa - CNIIE (MECD) are commissioning research to examine and identify excellence within models of bilingual education in Spain.  Full details for submitting your bid and the full research brief here.  The successful bid will be announced before Friday 19 December 2014. Walking and Talking in English in Alboraya

APAVAC, the Valencian Community association of English teachers, organised a group of members to try out Valencia International's Walking Talking Tour of Alboraya on Saturday 15th November.

Braving fierce winds the group followed the route especially prepared to exploit all the pedagogical possibilities that the Valencian Huerta has to offer in a multi-disciplinary activity that is now available to teachers who would like to spend a morning discovering monuments, mysteries, legends, etymology, religion, millennia, gastronomy, nutrition, ecology, ghosts, water, earth, fire, birds, invasion, migration, trade, mathematics, sustainability, threats, industry, resentment, reverence and disputes, to name a few.

On this, the second experimental visit, teachers from CIPFP FAITANAR, IES ALCORES, IES Molì del Sol, Mislata., IES REQUENA, IES ALBERIC, IES EL SALER IES Malilla , IES LA MORERIA, MISLATA , IES BARRI DEL CARME, VALENCIA, IES lUIS VIVES  and IES Turis participated.

Next it is the turn of the students. The first secondary school, IES Serpis has already booked its slot and Valencia International can now announce that the price for the activity will be 3€ per student, or 5€ if the school decides to include a visit to an Horchateria in the middle of the Huerta, where peacocks and turkeys provide background noise and the owners sell fresh vegetables grown in view. The price in this case includes a medium size Horchata and a home-made Farton.

On Saturday 8th November the first walk took place:

Teachers from CPMiguel Cervantes, Chirivella, IES Benlliure, IES Enric Valor Picanya, EOI Valencia, EOI Sagunto, IES Enric Soler i Godes in Benifaio, San Jose & San Andres, Massanassa, FP Misericordia, IES Salvador Gadea, Aldaia, IES Serpis and IES El Puig discovered that the Huerta of Alboraya can also be a classroom without a ceiling and without limits when Valencia International organised a walkabout for teachers to promote our new project; a wander through the huerta of Alboraya into the past and present of this unique place; drenched in history, endangered by progress, where looking is not the same as seeing, and where in order to understand, layers need to be peeled away as with one of the excellent local onions.

On our first walk we were accompanied by a reporter and a photographer from the EMV Levante newspaper, and the participants explained why they thought it would be a good idea to bring their students on the same walk.

The walk is essentially a CLIL activity, in that it includes elements of Languages, History, Geography, Natural Sciences, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and, obviously, Physical Education!

Mind you, not everybody on the walk was a teacher; we were joined by a Polish couple, computer engineer Peter Nowak and photographer Joanna Ruszczyk, who saw the activity announced in VI and wanted to know a bit more about the place they recently moved to.

Hollywood and History

The L’Iber Museum http://www.museoliber.org which has the largest collection of toy soldiers in the world, and Silver Screen Spain www.silver-screen-spain.com the Valencian project to promote cinema tourism in Spain, invite teachers to visit the museum with their students to participate in the project History and Hollywood.

The project History and Hollywood for Bachillerato students was launched in the academic year 2014/2015.

The project Hollywood and History is designed to:

Offer a CLIL activity combining History, English, Cinema and Tourism studies.

Explain and promote cinema tourism (all the films in the series are English language films made in Spain).

Encourage students to question the Hollywood version of History and examine the motives for the differences between fact and fiction in the movies.

Offer an activity that permits students to experience films in the original version and interact with a native speaker.

Examine the pedagogical material in the museum that is related to the film.

The project also includes a tour of the museum in English, accompanied by English and History teacher Bob Yareham, Editor of Valencia International.

The activity is being sponsored by Banco Sabadell, and is free for a limited number of schools until the agreed quota of schools is reached.

OUR FIRST IN CASTELLÓ

FIRST  APAVAC  CASTELLÓ ENGLISH TEACHERS’ MORNING

On the 25th October APAVAC held their first meeting in Castelló. Fifty-five colleagues attended, getting all kind of information about the origins, aims and everyday life of our association.

People attending could ask about what we do and suggested  improvements they thought positive.

The meeting took place in CEFIRE Castelló thanks to the support beyond the call of duty of asesora Sarah Bagant who made us feel  at home.

After the presentation , there was a talk by our APAVAC man in Castelló , teacher trainer Richard Brown whose “Firm foundations, fast feedback and new frontiers”  inspired all those present .

During the coffee break people went on sharing points of view, getting to know each other and also getting a closer view of the association.

Finally, we enjoyed a workshop by Rafael Casaní Martinez, also teacher and active member, in which we all took part in a pub quiz while learning how to prepare an activity like this for our classes.

At the end of the morning there was a raffle draw and then a group of people had lunch together as a perfect ending to the morning.

All in all the morning turned out to be very interesting, satisfying and rewarding.

A huge thank you, Castelló !!

Teachers and others are invited to a ‘Wander in the Huerta’ on Saturday 8th November 2014.

Discover an activity designed for school students by Valencia International, and decide if it is right for your students.

Monuments, mysteries, legends, etymology, religion, millennia, gastronomy, nutrition, ecology, water, earth, fire, birds, invasion, migration, trade, mathematics, sustainability, threats, industry, resentment, reverence, disputes; all of these are present in a wander through the huerta of Alboraya into the past and present of this unique place; drenched in history, endangered by progress, where looking is not the same as seeing, and where in order to understand, layers need to be peeled away as with one of the excellent local onions.

On this talk-walk we hope you will really see Alboraya, as you experience some of the essential aspects that make it such a unique place on so many different levels.

The tour, in English and on foot, leaves from the Alboraya Peris y Aragó underground station (Zone A) at 10 am on Saturday 8th Novemberand lasts about 2 hours, ending at a very special Horchateria in the middle of the Huerta between Alboraya and Almassera.

The walk is completely FREE.

Tour leader: Bob Yareham, English and History teacher and Editor of Valencia International.

We are especially keen to see teachers on this tour as it is being offered to schools this academic year. This CLIL activity includes elements of Languages, History, Geography, Natural Sciences, Mathematics, Botany and, obviously, Physical Education!

Participants are advised to bring sun hats and cream, good walking shoes and water. Children are welcome but are the responsibility of the parents.
