I'd reached that "certain" age, when I found myself worried about my parents, battling with my parents, telling my parents to do what I believed to be the right thing for them. AND, did I meet with resistence!!!
Friends my age seemed to be going through the same experience. Speaking for myself, when I finally sat myself down to think, I had to admit that in my fear of losing them, I'd become suffocatingly protective! The more protective I got, the more resistence I was up against!
It was while I was going through this internal struggle with myself that I came across "Can't We Talk About Something More Pleasant" by Roz Chast. In this moving yet hilarious book, Roz Chast, the New Yorker's cartoonist, mixes genres while talking about her parents decline leading to their inevitable passing away. Her genius lies in her hysterically funny portrayal of their ebb; their journey from deep, dark Brooklyn, though hospitals, hospices and the end. The accompanying cartoons are tender, humourous and utterly honest. Her painful retrospection of whether she did enough, whether she could have done more, her sketches of her mum on her deathbed, the sadness and the horror stay with you as do the comical accounts, both visual and verbal, of her parents idiosyncracies.
We meet on the 5th of Feb 2016 at 1900hrs at Luis Vives to talk about "The God of Small Things" by Arundhati Roy.
Take care
See you then!
Michelle
