An association to unite us all who teach English professionally has been created. The aim is to share experiences, exchange materials and encourage further training with conferences, lectures and debates and ultimately become the voice of teachers of English and liaise with all those involved and especially with our educational authority.

SAFOR

GANDIA OPENS ITS DOORS TO “APAVAC – LA SAFOR”

Saturday 4th March, 2017 saw the launch of the “La Safor” branch of APAVAC in Gandia.  Thanks to the generosity of APP – Academia de Profesores Profesionales – primary and secondary schoolteachers of English, EOI English teachers as well as qualified TEFL teachers were all welcomed to this new venue in central Gandia.

Hard at work

A phonology workshop was delivered by Christa Mundin with a focus on “Challenging Consonants”.  As always, this workshop was activity-based and all attendees have since received a copy of the presentation and originals of handouts so that they have the chance of immediately using new activities in the classroom.

There was a very positive level of participation and interest throughout the workshop.  The meeting wound up with Board members of APAVAC sharing its Mission Statement with the group and the advantages of joining this Association for a token annual subscription of 20 Euros.  The plan is to host 2 workshops per term in Gandia and for La Safor members to email Christa and Charlotte with suggestions for future topics.

Michelle was able to tell her own story of how APAVAC has helped her as a freelance teacher and spoke of the tangible benefits of being part of a professional association when you work alone.  This clearly resonated with the TEFL teachers in the room.  As the organiser of the APAVAC Book Club, Michelle was able to give details to this new group of potential members.

With all the presentations over, there was still time for people to network – a luxury which most of us don’t have during our working week!

We obviously hope that from this small beginning, the word about this new project:  “APAVAC: La Safor” will spread across the region and attract new members.
