An association to unite us all who teach English professionally has been created. The aim is to share experiences, exchange materials and encourage further training with conferences, lectures and debates and ultimately become the voice of teachers of English and liaise with all those involved and especially with our educational authority.

Fwd: Primary Teacher workshop. Dramatising Language: practical techniques for teaching young learners in Valencia (English Wink)

Dear APAVAC members,
We have the pleasure to announce the I Teacher's workshop in our center: "Dramatising Language: practical techniques for teaching young learners". Next Saturday, May 18 at 5 pm.
Drama games are a fun and dynamic way to help learners explore their imagination and discover their own creativity, while also developing their confidence and teamwork skills. In this workshop, we will look at ways in which such activities can be integrated into the classroom.
1)      Introduction to theatre activities. Group dynamics, warmers and icebreakers.
2)      Advanced theatre activities. Including roll games or character interpretation, and interactive story creation.
Useful for teachers with some or no drama experience. The time dedicated to each activity could vary given to the necessities or proposals of the group.
Principal aim:
This fun and practical 2-hour workshop, has two principal objectives: in one hand, it will give the teacher a set of strategies which will permit to add a new dimension to its teaching capacities, and in the other hand, an intensive practice of the English language.
Also, it will serve to explore and go in depth in a creative and practical methodology which can give you resources that can be used for the teaching of Primary students. Learn to use drama techniques: games, problem resolution, improvisation in the foreign language classroom according to the student's linguistic level, etc.
Finally, it will be an opportunity for teachers to share ideas about good practices. Given that the course is directed to Primary teachers, the session will focus on adequate techniques for different levels and ages, proposing ideas that could be adapted to each particular case.
Speaker:
John Harrop splits his time between teaching, teacher training, his activity as a writer and Bat-i-Burillo Theater. He has worked around Europe doing different theatre workshops and interactive shows for students and teachers. He has also written educational material for the BBC, OUP (Move On), and Macmillan Heinemann (United y Imagine). Now he lives in Sevilla.
The session takes place as a workshop. It is recommended to bring comfortable and informal clothes, as well as sport shoes. The material for the workshop will be send via email (.pdf or .doc documents) so that the ideas will be easier to adapt, and visualize the links easily.

ESP Seminar : English in Vocational Training

Last Saturday morning (12 May) APAVAC   held our  I ESP (English for Vocational Training) Seminar in Alicante. All in all it  was  a great opportunity for sharing and learning and as one of our colleagues commented  "...this seminar was an important step forward. We English teachers are still trying to be professionals despite our difficult situation."
Organizing this event implied  a lot of effort and we are proud of the outcome. We also devoted resources belonging to our membership to make the event free for all. Resources which regretfully were wasted when a number of the people who had registered did not turn up on the day without  notice. All those attending were invited at the coffee-shop next door during the break. Coffee and pastries were wasted and we also had to apologise to Ristorante Prego  where 22 meals had been booked. To avoid disappointments we would kindly  ask those registering for future events to let us know in advance in case they cannot make it.
We would like to thank Catalina Iliescu, Director of  Seu Universitaria Ciudad de Alicante who granted  their  wonderful premises, Dr José Mateo and Dr Victoria Guillén who provided the theoretical basis with highly interesting  lectures, Amparo Fernández, Isabel Berenguer, Carmen Antón and Vicente Sánchez who contributed with a hands-on approach of their daily practice. We would also like to thank publishers Oxford University Press, McMillan  and Pearson-Longman  who showed  their ESP materials. The last two generously gave away a number of  valuable items for our prize-draw.

ESP Seminar : English in Vocational Training

ESP Seminar : English in Vocational Training

We are pleased to announce that a seminar devoted to English for Ciclos Formativos  is being held in Alicante city  next May 12 at (click) Sede Universitaria Ciudad de Alicante , Avda. Ramón y Cajal,nº 4 , from 9  to 14 h.

This event is only possible thanks to the generous effort of the University of Alicante. We do appreciate their help.

This mini conference is organised by APAVAC and endorsed by Universitat d'Alacant. At APAVAC we realise that ESP is one of the most neglected areas in ELT and wish to bring together professionals  who are involved in a growing field. As most know, LOE  adaptation of Vocational Training Cycles means that a number of hours of Technical English are being included in the syllabuses as a RMI (Reserva de Modulo en Inglés) and although only temporarily the increment in hours for us Teachers of English is substantial. We also know that especially in industrial Cycles published  materials are scarce and many of us are at a bit of a loss when designing course content. We also feel neglected by  our educational authority who will not provide proper training.
We would like this  event to be the starting point of a permanent group of colleagues who get together to share materials, experiences, ideas and general info on all ESP matters.

The event is free and open to all. However, priority is given to APAVAC members since there are only 80 places.

Bear in mind, though, that training activities such as this are free and only possible thanks to the generosity of our speakers and the support of  APAVAC membership. If you are not a member yet, please contribute by joining  us
