An association to unite us all who teach English professionally has been created. The aim is to share experiences, exchange materials and encourage further training with conferences, lectures and debates and ultimately become the voice of teachers of English and liaise with all those involved and especially with our educational authority.

APAVAC Year Opening .

Last Friday 30 we held our year opening event at APAVAC. We are very fortunate at the association to have friends who help generously with their effort , their time and their enthusiasm. This time however we were given a most precious gift. We were given talent.
Pianist and friend Yamini Teresa Prabhu Barretto gave a piano recital for members and friends in a memorable event.

PROGRAMME

Prelude and Nocturne op 9 for left   hand

Two  movements  for Sonata No. 3 op. 23 in F# minor.
Drammatico,
Allegretto.

Sonata No. 4 op. 30
Andante,
Prestissimo Volando

IES Luis Vives students of Art and Music also had the opportunity to enjoy a Lecture-Demonstration with Yamini using piano fragments to illustrate  commentaries on the life and works of the Russian composer Scriabin.

The seminar was conducted in English so that  students and teachers would enjoy two universal languages: music and the XXI century lingua franca-English .

Such was the involvement of the student audience that the following morning our pianist Yamini was invited to an art class were students could capture the spirit of the music on canvas.

All in all a unique opportunity for members and friends to relish the exquisite wonder of Art with a capital A.

Thank you Yamini for a delightful evening.   We all went home with a big smile

APAVAC END OF THE YEAR CONFERENCE

Dear members

At APAVAC we have organised an end of the year gathering for members. We are calling for a Saturday morning event on June 1 at IES Lluís Vives. We will be holding a special mini conference and have asked two of our II Conference speakers to repeat their lectures as they were quite a hit and many of you missed them . They are Michelle Ann Prabhu with ”Tools of the trade of a wandering teacher” and Christa Mundin with “Teaching pronunciation: the “Cinderella” of language teaching”. This time we will take things easy , though and will have more than an hour to go into detail and discuss points of interest.
In between our two speakers we are taking a very long coffee break because we are asking our members to bring their students’ projects and show them to an audience. We are calling that : “ presume de alumnos ” exhibition. You can bring a selection in a USB and project on a screen, show other materials on a desk or anything you consider interesting or are proud of and want to show your colleagues.
There will also be a second edition of our very successful “book flea market“ so you can bring your books and swap them.
We will wrap it up with a "germanor" meal at a nearby restaurant for food, wine and laughs.

Seminar on A2 speaking test.

Last Friday 8th February 25 members of APAVAC attended a great seminar on  assessing and testing speaking at A2 level. It was held at IES Luis Vives where LENGUAS VIVAS , which is an official examiner centre of the Cambridge University ESOL Examinations, offered an interesting, surprising and very useful seminar. It was presented by Ximo Espinosa from Lenguas Vivas and  carried out by Richard Dunn  who is at the board of examiners for all the Cambridge examinations.

INTERESTING to learn about  the method to design the tests which most of us have done and  what items of the speaking were the ones to take into account and which ones were to be discarded. The use of scales to chunk the different aspects of speaking were extremely  USEFUL!!! And finally it was SURPRISING to realise that the test Cambridge University handle,  are far easier than  the ones we are using in our A2 tests......!!!!! Something we all should think about ....

II APAVAC CONFERENCE
<<KNOW HOW, KNOW WHO>>
<<Saturday, November 24 at IES Llüis Vives, Valencia >>
<<CALL FOR PAPERS>>

Our second conference is in the oven. Bearing in mind that many members have suggested having a showcase of how we use our imagination and creativity in the classroom , now we invite you to show your know-how for an audience of colleagues.
We would like this conference to focus on what regular teachers use in their everyday teaching to motivate their students. We know all of you have a drawer full of excellent ideas and we are asking to share them and bring them to the conference. They don't  have to be   revolutionary  but just something that works well and you would  recommend to others, be it technological (digital boardsacoustics, electronics, uploading sound files ,etc), ESP and Vocational Training, class management, grammar games, wonderful websites, anything you consider might be of  interest to others. It could also be something you learnt  at a PALE  course and you want to share or what you learnt from a  Comenius project and want to disseminate.
The deadline for suggestions is October  21. Speakers will be assigned three 30 minute slots either before or after the break to give their talk to a different  audience every 30 minutes. There will be six speakers simultaneously so the audience will be able to attend up to six talks during the morning.
Come forward, show us yours !
The conference is free and only for members. If you want to become a member just click HERE

ESP Seminar : English in Vocational Training

Last Saturday morning (12 May) APAVAC   held our  I ESP (English for Vocational Training) Seminar in Alicante. All in all it  was  a great opportunity for sharing and learning and as one of our colleagues commented  "...this seminar was an important step forward. We English teachers are still trying to be professionals despite our difficult situation."
Organizing this event implied  a lot of effort and we are proud of the outcome. We also devoted resources belonging to our membership to make the event free for all. Resources which regretfully were wasted when a number of the people who had registered did not turn up on the day without  notice. All those attending were invited at the coffee-shop next door during the break. Coffee and pastries were wasted and we also had to apologise to Ristorante Prego  where 22 meals had been booked. To avoid disappointments we would kindly  ask those registering for future events to let us know in advance in case they cannot make it.
We would like to thank Catalina Iliescu, Director of  Seu Universitaria Ciudad de Alicante who granted  their  wonderful premises, Dr José Mateo and Dr Victoria Guillén who provided the theoretical basis with highly interesting  lectures, Amparo Fernández, Isabel Berenguer, Carmen Antón and Vicente Sánchez who contributed with a hands-on approach of their daily practice. We would also like to thank publishers Oxford University Press, McMillan  and Pearson-Longman  who showed  their ESP materials. The last two generously gave away a number of  valuable items for our prize-draw.

ESP Seminar : English in Vocational Training

ESP Seminar : English in Vocational Training

We are pleased to announce that a seminar devoted to English for Ciclos Formativos  is being held in Alicante city  next May 12 at (click) Sede Universitaria Ciudad de Alicante , Avda. Ramón y Cajal,nº 4 , from 9  to 14 h.

This event is only possible thanks to the generous effort of the University of Alicante. We do appreciate their help.

This mini conference is organised by APAVAC and endorsed by Universitat d'Alacant. At APAVAC we realise that ESP is one of the most neglected areas in ELT and wish to bring together professionals  who are involved in a growing field. As most know, LOE  adaptation of Vocational Training Cycles means that a number of hours of Technical English are being included in the syllabuses as a RMI (Reserva de Modulo en Inglés) and although only temporarily the increment in hours for us Teachers of English is substantial. We also know that especially in industrial Cycles published  materials are scarce and many of us are at a bit of a loss when designing course content. We also feel neglected by  our educational authority who will not provide proper training.
We would like this  event to be the starting point of a permanent group of colleagues who get together to share materials, experiences, ideas and general info on all ESP matters.

The event is free and open to all. However, priority is given to APAVAC members since there are only 80 places.

Bear in mind, though, that training activities such as this are free and only possible thanks to the generosity of our speakers and the support of  APAVAC membership. If you are not a member yet, please contribute by joining  us
